ChatGPT and Claude both sell subscriptions on the web in US dollars, and both are available in most countries. For many readers outside the US, a local Visa or Mastercard simply works. When it does not, the decline usually comes from your bank's own rules or from a mismatch the payment processor flags, not from a ban on foreign cards.

This guide covers the common reasons for declines, how to fix them, and the fallback routes: in-app purchase through the App Store or Google Play, a US card, and gifts. Prices are as of November 2026. Confirm the current price at checkout.

Prices at a glance

US prices as of November 2026, before tax. In-app prices are from the US App Store listings. OpenAI's pricing page could not be checked for this update, so confirm ChatGPT web prices at chatgpt.com/pricing.

PlanWeb (USD)US App Store
ChatGPT GoSee chatgpt.com/pricing$8.00 / month
ChatGPT PlusSee chatgpt.com/pricing$19.99 / month
ChatGPT Pro 100 / 200 / 500See chatgpt.com/pricing$100 / $200 / $500 per month
Claude Pro$20 / month, or $200 / year$20.00 / month, or $214.99 / year
Claude Max (5x Pro usage)$100 / month$124.99 / month
Claude Ultra (10x Pro weekly usage)$200 / month$249.99 / month

The takeaway: Claude Max and Ultra cost about 25% more in the App Store than on the web, Claude Pro annual costs $14.99 more, and Claude Pro monthly costs the same. For ChatGPT, compare the in-app price with the web price before you choose. If the web checkout works for you, it is the cheaper route for Claude's higher tiers.

Why foreign cards get declined

Web checkouts for both services run on a card processor that checks each payment for fraud signals. A foreign card is not a problem by itself, but these things often are:

CauseWhat it looks likeFix
Your bank blocks international online paymentsInstant decline, or a fraud alert from your bankTurn on online / overseas payments in your bank app, then retry once
3-D Secure not completedPayment stalls or fails after a pop-upApprove the push or SMS from your bank. Disable pop-up blockers
Billing address mismatch"Card declined" even though the card works elsewhereEnter the address exactly as your bank has it on file
Prepaid or virtual cardsDeclines on one service, success on anotherUse a regular credit or debit card
Repeated retriesEvery card starts failingStop for 24 hours. Repeated failures raise the risk score

Fix a declined card, step by step

  1. In your bank app, enable online and international (or "overseas") transactions for the card. Some banks have separate switches for each.
  2. Make sure the card has 3-D Secure set up, and keep your phone nearby to approve the payment.
  3. At checkout, type the billing address your bank has on file, in the same format and spelling. Do not invent an address. A mismatch is the most common cause of declines.
  4. Try once. If it fails, check your bank app for a blocked transaction and call the bank if needed.
  5. If the card still fails, wait a day and move to one of the routes below rather than retrying many times.

Paying in USD with a non-US card often adds a foreign transaction fee from your bank. Check your card's terms. For a cheaper ongoing cost, see the card options in using US cards from abroad.

Route 1: Subscribe in the app, through your own app store

Both apps sell subscriptions through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Apple or Google charges you and passes the subscription to your account. This often works when the web checkout does not, because you pay with whatever your app store already accepts, which may include local cards, carrier billing or local gift cards.

Use the app store for the country you actually live in. The price is set by that store and may be in your local currency.

  1. Install ChatGPT (developer OpenAI) or Claude by Anthropic (developer Anthropic PBC). Check the developer name to avoid look-alike apps.
  2. Sign in with your own account.
  3. Open settings, tap Upgrade, choose a plan and confirm the payment with your app store.
  4. The subscription applies to your account everywhere, including the web and desktop apps.

Before you go this way, know the limits:

  • Changing your store country is hard. Apple requires you to spend your balance, cancel subscriptions and add a payment method from the new country before you switch. Google Play requires you to be physically in the new country with a local payment method, and only lets you change country once every 90 days. Your old balance stays tied to the old country.
  • Gift cards are region-locked. A US Apple Gift Card is valid only for US transactions. It cannot top up an account from another country.
  • In-app prices can be higher. See the table above. Claude Max and Ultra cost more in the App Store.
  • Cancel where you subscribed. An App Store subscription is cancelled in your Apple account settings, and a Google Play one in Google Play. You cannot cancel them from the website.

Route 2: Use a US card

If you already have a US card, or plan to get one, it avoids most declines and the conversion fee on USD charges:

Use the address the card issuer has on file as the billing address. If you live abroad, keep the card in good standing with the steps in using US cards from abroad.

Route 3: Gifts from someone else

  • Claude gift subscriptions. As of November 2026, Anthropic's help center says gift subscriptions are currently unavailable to purchase. Gifts bought earlier can still be redeemed on the web at claude.ai/gift/redeem, and expire 365 days after purchase. If you already pay through the App Store or Google Play, you must wait for that subscription to end before redeeming.
  • App Store gift cards. A friend in your country can buy a gift card for your country's store. A gift card from another country will not work on your account.

Route 4: Crypto cards

Crypto debit cards are funded with stablecoins and spend like a Visa or Mastercard. They are a last resort here: they are often prepaid or virtual, so they fail checks more often, and card programs close at short notice. Read what is a U card, U card risks and the comparison first, and only use one if you legally live where the issuer operates.

What to avoid

  • Resellers who "upgrade your account". They ask for your password or pay with unknown cards. Accounts get taken over, banned or charged back.
  • Shared accounts. Both services' terms forbid them, and other users can see your chats.
  • Random addresses and throwaway virtual cards. Making up a billing address is not a fix, and many such cards are declined anyway.

FAQ

My card works on ChatGPT but not on Claude. Why? Each service sets its own fraud rules. One can accept a card the other declines, especially prepaid or virtual cards and cards with address mismatches. Try the steps above, then use the in-app route.

Is there sales tax or VAT? Claude's pricing page says its prices do not include tax. Any tax depends on your billing country and is added at checkout or by your app store.

Can I switch from an in-app subscription to a web subscription? Yes. Cancel in the App Store or Google Play first, wait for the period to end, then subscribe on the web. Otherwise you may be billed twice.

Will a VPN help my card go through? No. Declines come from card and address checks. Using a service from an unsupported location breaks its terms and can get the account suspended.
