Choosing a US VPS as a Non-Resident

A virtual private server (VPS) in the United States is a small, always-on Linux machine you rent by the hour or month. Non-residents use one to host a website or blog for US visitors, run a small API or bot, test code against US-hosted services, keep a personal VPN endpoint to reach their own US accounts safely while travelling, or learn Linux administration. You do not need a US address or US bank account to rent one.

This guide compares the common providers as of September 2026, explains which US region to pick if you live in Asia, and walks you through the first 15 minutes of securing a new server.

Prices below are the cheapest general-purpose plan, as of September 2026, excluding tax. Confirm on each official site before buying.

#Notes on specific providers

• Hetzner US is no longer a budget choice. Hetzner raised US cloud prices on 1 April 2026 and again on 15 June 2026. The CPX11 in Ashburn or Hillsboro went from $6.99 to $20.49 per month. Hetzner's European locations are still inexpensive, but for a US server the other providers are now much cheaper.
• IPv6-only plans (Lightsail $3.50, Vultr $2.50) are cheap, but many networks and services still need IPv4. Beginners should pick a plan with a public IPv4 address.
• BandwagonHost sells "CN2 GIA-E" plans in Los Angeles. These use premium carrier routes (线路), so websites respond faster for visitors on mainland China networks. Expect to pay several times more than for a plain US VPS.
• Free tiers. Google Cloud's always-free e2-micro is very small (about 1 GB RAM, shared CPU). Oracle Cloud's free tier is larger; see Oracle Cloud Always Free.

#East coast or West coast?

Latency (ping) depends mostly on physical distance and routing. From East Asia:

These are rough figures. Real latency varies a lot with your home ISP. Most providers publish a "looking glass" or test IP, so ping it from your own connection before you buy.

#Paying from outside the US

• Foreign Visa/Mastercard cards work at all the providers above. Some banks block the first charge as "foreign online". Turn on overseas online payments in your banking app first.
• Alipay and PayPal are accepted by DigitalOcean, Vultr and BandwagonHost, and PayPal by several others.
• Verification holds. New accounts often get a small temporary charge ($1 or a prepayment of about $5). Some providers ask for ID if their fraud checks trigger.
• Prepaid and virtual cards, including crypto "U-cards", are frequently declined for signup. See U-card risks.
• Enter your real billing address and name. A mismatch is the most common reason new accounts get locked.

#Step by step: your first server

1. Create an SSH key on your computer. Run ssh-keygen -t ed25519, then copy the contents of ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub.
2. Deploy the server. Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Debian 12, the region, and the plan. Paste your public key in the "SSH keys" field.
3. Log in. Run ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP (on Lightsail the default user is ubuntu or admin).
4. Update everything. Run apt update && apt full-upgrade -y, then reboot.
5. Create a normal user. Run adduser alice && usermod -aG sudo alice, then copy your key into /home/alice/.ssh/authorized_keys.
6. Harden SSH. In /etc/ssh/sshd_config set PasswordAuthentication no and PermitRootLogin no, then run systemctl restart ssh. Keep your current session open and test the new login in a second terminal before you close it.
7. Turn on a firewall. Run ufw allow OpenSSH && ufw allow 80,443/tcp && ufw enable. Many providers also have a cloud firewall in the web console. Use both.
8. Automatic security updates. Run apt install unattended-upgrades and enable it with dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades.
9. Optional: install fail2ban to slow down brute-force attempts, and set up the provider's snapshot or backup feature.

#Common pitfalls

• Bandwidth overages. Transfer quotas (500 GB–1 TB) are per month. Overage is billed per GB.
• Stopped is not deleted. On AWS, GCP and Oracle, a stopped instance can still bill for its disk and IP. Destroy the resources you don't need.
• Datacenter IPs look like datacenter IPs. Streaming, banking and some AI services treat VPS IPs as "hosting" traffic. A VPS is not a "native residential IP". See Residential vs datacenter IP.
• Email. Many providers block outbound port 25 by default to fight spam.
• Promo plans. Very cheap annual deals may have oversold CPUs and slow support. Keep backups elsewhere.

#FAQ

Do I need a US address or SSN? No. All the providers above accept international customers with a foreign card or PayPal.

Which is best for a beginner? Lightsail or DigitalOcean. Both have simple dashboards, fixed monthly prices and good documentation.

Can I host a site for visitors in mainland China on a US VPS? Technically yes, but speed depends on routing, and sites served inside mainland China need an ICP filing with a mainland host. Premium routes such as CN2 GIA help with speed, but they do not replace legal requirements.

Is a VPS the same as a VPN service? No. A VPS is a general-purpose server. Whatever you run on it is your responsibility under the provider's terms and your local laws.
