Wi-Fi Calling lets your US SIM register with its carrier over the internet instead of a local cell tower. Once it's on, your US number can receive texts and calls anywhere you have Wi-Fi, or data from another SIM, and you don't pay roaming charges. For most non-residents this is how a US number stays useful day to day.

This guide assumes you already have a real carrier number, such as Ultra Mobile PayGo, Tello or US Mobile.

How it works

With Wi-Fi Calling on, the phone opens an encrypted tunnel (IPsec) over the internet to the carrier's network in the US. As far as the carrier is concerned, the line is "at home." Texts and calls are routed to it just as if you were in the US. The only local requirement is a working internet connection. It doesn't matter whether the local network or the data SIM is foreign.

Wi-Fi Calling only works while the line is registered. If the phone is off, the plan has lapsed, or the tunnel is blocked, messages may be lost rather than queued.

Which carriers support it

CarrierWi-Fi Calling abroad (as of September 2026)Notes
T-Mobile prepaidYesWi-Fi calls to US/Mexico/Canada free, others $0.50/min
Ultra MobileYesEnable in your account first, then on the phone
Mint MobileYesWi-Fi calls/texts don't use roaming passes

Support can also depend on your phone model and software. Carriers may restrict Wi-Fi Calling in certain countries.

Setup (do this while you can still test)

  1. Enable in the carrier account if required (Ultra and some others ask for an E911 address).
  2. Enable on the phone.
    • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → select the US line → Wi-Fi Calling → On.
    • Android: Settings → Connections / Network → SIM → Wi-Fi Calling. The menu varies by brand.
  3. Set the preference to "Wi-Fi preferred" if your phone offers it.
  4. Test. Turn on airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi back on, wait a minute, and look for "Wi-Fi" next to the carrier name. Then send a text to the US number from another phone.

Dual-SIM layout abroad

A common setup:

Physical SIMLocal / home carrierOn (this line provides data)Off
eSIMUS numberOffOff
  • Wi-Fi Calling on the US line works over Wi-Fi and, on most modern phones, over the other SIM's mobile data. You get codes even when you're away from Wi-Fi.
  • Keep data roaming off on the US line so it never pays roaming rates by accident.
  • Ultra PayGo does not include data roaming at all.

Testing checklist

  • Wi-Fi Calling indicator shows on the US line
  • A text from a normal phone arrives
  • A text from a short code arrives (trigger a code from your bank, broker or Google account)
  • It still works on mobile data from the other SIM (turn Wi-Fi off)
  • It still works after a phone restart
  • You have backup 2FA (authenticator app, passkey, backup codes)

The short-code caveat

Many banks send codes from short codes (5–6 digit senders). These usually arrive over Wi-Fi Calling. Some users, though, report short-code texts not arriving on certain MVNOs abroad. Test with each service you depend on. If a bank's codes don't arrive, switch that account to an authenticator app or passkey if it allows.

Keeping the line reliable

  • Keep the phone with the US line charged and switched on when you expect a code.
  • Avoid battery-saver or "low data" modes that suspend background connections for the US line.
  • If you use a spare phone just for the US number, leave it on Wi-Fi at home and check it after you request a code.
  • Renew the plan on time. A lapsed plan stops Wi-Fi Calling immediately.

Mainland China and other restricted networks

  • Wi-Fi Calling uses an encrypted tunnel (IPsec) to the US carrier. Some networks block or throttle it, and results in mainland China vary by ISP and location. Test on your own home network before you rely on it.
  • If the US line uses roaming data instead, that traffic is normally routed back through the US carrier, so it may behave like a US connection. Roaming costs money, though, and some plans (such as Ultra PayGo) include no data roaming.
  • Follow local telecom and network rules.

Troubleshooting

SymptomTry
No "Wi-Fi" indicatorToggle airplane mode; confirm the E911 address; check Wi-Fi Calling is enabled in the carrier account
Works on Wi-Fi, not on mobile dataMake sure the phone allows Wi-Fi Calling over the other SIM's data (iOS does this automatically on supported carriers); try a different network
Normal texts arrive, bank codes don'tShort-code issue. Ask the bank for voice-call OTP or an authenticator app
Stopped after an updateRe-enable Wi-Fi Calling; reset network settings as a last resort (this removes saved Wi-Fi passwords)
Line shows "No Service" and never registersCheck the plan is paid and active. Lapsed lines stop working

FAQ

Does receiving texts over Wi-Fi Calling cost anything? Usually it counts as a normal domestic text on your plan, not a roaming text.

Can I make calls to the US for free? Many carriers treat Wi-Fi calls to US numbers as domestic. Check your plan's terms.

Does the phone need to stay on? Yes. Texts can only be delivered while the US line is registered. Missed texts may not be re-sent.
