RedPocket on eBay: a $30/Year US Number

RedPocket Mobile is a US prepaid MVNO that resells service on the AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon networks. It runs an official eBay store that sells annual plans you can only get on eBay. The cheapest one costs about $30 per 360 days as of September 2026 and includes unlimited US talk and text plus 200 MB of data every 30 days on AT&T, which RedPocket calls GSMA.

That works out to about $2.50 a month for a real carrier number, not a VoIP one, making it one of the cheapest ways to keep a US number. There are three catches. RedPocket says eBay plans do not include international roaming, so abroad you receive texts only over Wi-Fi Calling. RedPocket says activation can only be completed from inside the US. And eBay plans do not auto-renew: you buy a renewal PIN every year. This guide covers ordering, activation, Wi-Fi Calling and renewal in that order.

The store also sells bigger annual plans (3 GB, 12 GB and so on) for roughly $120 to $200. If you only need the number for verification codes, the $30 plan is enough.

#Who it is for

• Good fit: you want the cheapest long-term carrier number for bank, broker and PayPal 2FA codes, and you are fine renewing once a year.
• Not a good fit: your phone has no eSIM and you have no physical-SIM phone to spare, or you need texts to arrive over a cellular network abroad (there is no roaming). Look at Ultra Mobile PayGo or US Mobile and Tello instead.

#Check before you buy

1. Phone: it must be unlocked. For eSIM it must support eSIM. Most iPhones sold in mainland China have dual physical SIM slots and no eSIM, so check your model. Dial *#06#: if an EID shows up, the phone usually supports eSIM.
2. IMEI: eSIM activation asks for the phone's IMEI. On iPhone it is under Settings → General → About. If the phone lists two IMEIs, RedPocket asks for IMEI 2 (the eSIM one).
3. Email: the PIN goes to your eBay account email, and renewal PINs will too. Use an inbox you will not lose.
4. Address: eBay checkout needs a shipping address and RedPocket needs an E911 address for Wi-Fi Calling. Only use an address you are entitled to use, such as your own US address or a relative's or friend's with their consent. See Getting a US address as a non-resident.

#Step 1: Order from the official eBay store

1. Search eBay for RedPocket prepaid plan and pick a listing sold by RedPocket's own store (RedPocket Store), with a long feedback history. The $30 plan's title reads like "360-Day RedPocket Prepaid Wireless Phone Plan: Unlimited Talk / Text + 200MB Data".
2. Buy only from the official store. Resold PINs and "pre-activated numbers" from third parties come with unknown history and an account you do not control.
3. Pick the SIM type in the drop-down:
   • eSIM: the PIN arrives by email, nothing to ship. If you are abroad, this is realistically your only option.
   • Physical SIM: shipped by USPS to a US address, usually in 3 to 7 business days.
   • Renewal / Existing SIM: for topping up an existing RedPocket line. Do not pick this for a new number.
4. Read the listing description and confirm the network (GSMA / AT&T) and the allowances you expect.
5. Pay. eBay takes PayPal and major cards. Whether foreign-issued cards go through varies; if one is declined, try PayPal or another card.
6. Within minutes to one business day you will get an Activation PIN by email. Orders on redpocket.com get a Confirmation Code instead; eBay orders get a PIN, and that is what you enter at activation. Check your spam folder before contacting support.

If the listing has no eSIM option on the day you buy, RedPocket's help center describes an alternative: buy a GSMA eSIM on redpocket.com (reported at about $2; check the site) and enter the eBay Activation PIN during activation.

#Step 2: Activate on redpocket.com

1. Open redpocket.com/activate and enter the Activation PIN from the email.
2. Choose Get a new number, or port in an existing US number (you need the old carrier's account number and transfer PIN).
3. For eSIM, enter the phone's IMEI (IMEI 2 if there are two).
4. Enter the service ZIP code, which sets the area code.
5. Create a RedPocket account with your own email and a strong password, and fill in the rest truthfully.
6. After a few minutes the page and your inbox show an eSIM QR code.
7. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android it is usually under SIM manager → Add eSIM. Rename the line "RedPocket" so you can tell it apart.
8. Log in at redpocket.com/my-lines and confirm the line is Active. Note the number and the expiry date.

#Step 3: Turn on Wi-Fi Calling

Because eBay plans have no roaming, Wi-Fi Calling is how you receive texts abroad: the phone connects back to AT&T over any Wi-Fi network and US texts come in as usual.

1. Enable it on the account: RedPocket asks you to contact support to turn on Wi-Fi Calling for your line and give them an E911 address. Use live chat on the website, email support@redpocket.com or call 712-775-8777.
2. Enable it on the phone: iPhone: Settings → Cellular → select the RedPocket line → Wi-Fi Calling → on, and enter the emergency (E911) address when asked. On Android it is in the SIM or call settings.
3. Test it: turn on Airplane Mode, turn Wi-Fi back on, and send yourself a text from another phone. "Wi-Fi" next to the carrier name in the status bar means it is working.

Things to know:

• On GSMA, Wi-Fi calls do not use plan minutes, according to RedPocket (T-Mobile lines do).
• Wi-Fi Calling supports plain SMS but not MMS.
• "Unlimited text" means plain SMS. On Android, consider turning RCS chat off for this line, because RCS messages use data. iMessage between iPhones also needs a data or Wi-Fi connection.
• The E911 address is for locating emergency calls inside the US. In an emergency abroad, call the local emergency number instead.

#Step 4: Test before you link accounts

1. Text and call the number from another phone and confirm both arrive.
2. Set up voicemail right away. Users report that leaving it for weeks makes it hard to get working.
3. Try a code from a low-stakes service first, then link banks and brokers. Some banks send codes from 5 or 6 digit short codes, so test with your own bank.
4. After linking, add a second 2FA method wherever you can (an authenticator app or a passkey) and keep backup codes offline.

#Renewing each year with an eBay PIN

eBay plans do not auto-renew. Before the line expires, buy another plan on eBay and enter the new PIN in your account:

1. In RedPocket's eBay store, buy the same plan and choose Renewal / Existing SIM.
2. When the new PIN arrives by email, log in at redpocket.com/my-lines and open your line.
3. Scroll to the bottom, find the PIN Code field, enter the PIN and submit. It usually takes effect within 10 minutes.
4. Refresh and confirm the expiry date has moved forward.

Timing:

• A renewal PIN also expires 90 days after the order, so buy it within the last 90 days before your expiry date.
• Aim to finish renewing about two weeks before expiry, leaving room for declined payments or late emails.
• The term is 360 days, so the expiry date moves about 5 days earlier every year. Don't reuse last year's date.

#What happens if it expires

If the renewal date passes without a renewal, the line goes into Airtime Expired status and service stops. If it stays that way, the number is eventually released.

• RedPocket does not publish how many days it holds the number. Users report around 30 days, but don't count on it.
• Once the line is closed, you have to contact support to reactivate, and RedPocket does not guarantee you get the number back.
• A calendar reminder two weeks before expiry beats any recovery attempt.

#Switching phones

• iPhone to iPhone: with both on iOS 16 or later, signed in to the same iCloud account, Bluetooth on and side by side, use iOS's "Transfer From Nearby iPhone". Your number, plan and balances stay the same.
• Android involved, or no direct transfer: log in, open the line, and under Line Summary choose to replace the SIM or eSIM. Buy a new eSIM (reported at about $2) and scan its QR code. The old eSIM is disabled.
• Before switching, make sure you can log in to your account and receive email, and ideally have another way to receive codes.

#FAQ

What is the difference between eBay and redpocket.com plans? The $30 plan is sold only on eBay. Annual plans on redpocket.com cost more, but their GSMA plans include Global Passport roaming. eBay plans have no roaming and do not auto-renew.

Can I pick T-Mobile or Verizon? The $30 listing currently says GSMA (AT&T). For other networks and larger plans, go by the listing on the day you buy.

Is it VoIP? Will banks accept it? It is a real mobile line on AT&T's network and generally is not flagged as VoIP. Banks also look at your address, device and number history, so test it yourself.

Can I still receive texts after using the 200 MB? Yes. Data and SMS are counted separately, so plain SMS is not affected by the 200 MB cap. RCS, iMessage and MMS need data or Wi-Fi.

What if my PIN expired before I activated? RedPocket says plans expire 90 days after the order. Contact support and explain, but don't expect a fix.

Can I get a refund? Check the refund policy on the eBay listing before you buy.
